Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper, and singer. Queen Latifah is an American rapper, actress as well as a singer. Queen Latifah was born in and was raised in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita an educator who worked in Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. an officer in the police force. Latifah's parents divorced when she was 10 years old. Latifah was brought up in the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah is a word that means gentle and kind. Her mother gave it to her when she was aged eight. Latifah was always large, at 5'10", she was the strong forward for her high school basketball team. As part of a school production she sang Home from The Wiz. Latifah began beatboxing with the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah was among those who were part of the first version of the Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. The single caught the eye to Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
