Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson, a jazz singer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Chillicothe, Ohio on 20 February 1937 to Olden Wilson an ironworker who was employed for a lengthy period as housekeeper. Nancy Wilson was the only born child at the age of 6. The music passion of her father and his collection of records at home had a major influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. When she was young she was already able to establish the impression of who she was and what she wanted to do. The choir at church encouraged her to develop this talent. When she was still in high school, she appeared regularly in Skyline Melodies. When she was fifteen, she began her career in night clubs. Nancy was a high school graduate aged 17 and enrolled in Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a whole year. Then she dropped out to pursue a profession as a professional musician. Her first recording was in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. The group performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy started recording with Dot Records in 1956, when she was part of the band. Cannonball Adderley advised that she should move into New York to further her professional career. She moved into The Big Town to begin her career in the year 1959. Her agent heard her speak in The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she then signed her contract. Within one month of her arrival in New York City. The contract was signed by Capitol Records in the year 1960. The year was 1960 when she released her first single. Guess Who You Saw Today. Her albums were a hit and Capitol released five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. Following the influence of Adderley the singer-songwriter shifted her focus away from R&B towards jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley as well as their 1962 partnership led her to the top of the charts. She had her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. This performance brought her to the stage at New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
