Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winning jazz singer. Nancy Wilson was born on February 20, 1937, in the city of Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson who worked in an ironworks, and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic worker. Nancy was the first out of six kids. Her father's love of music as well as the music he played at home were a huge influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. In her early years she had already developed a strong sense of who she was as well as what she hoped to accomplish. The church choir was instrumental in developing her talent. The show was on television at the age of 15 and started performing regularly on the tv show Skyline Melodies while still in high school. That same year, Nancy began working at nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for an entire year prior to deciding to pursue a career as a musician. Her first record was recorded in 1956 with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured with her from 1956-1958. Nancy began her recording career with Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball told her she should relocate in New York and go to The Big Town to further her career. In just a few months she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club situated on Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly took her on. The singer made her debut in the year 1960, with a single after he obtained the contract with Capitol Records. Guess who? Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. Adderley encouraged her to shift away from R&B to music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley as well as their 1962 partnership led her to the top of the charts. Her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. This performance helped her land a gig at the New York Coconut Grove in 1963, which was America's biggest nightclub.
